Tabasco

After a long drive from Campeche to the state of Tabasco, we reached the town of Teapa where we stayed for one night. We had planned to see a tourist cave there called "Grutas de Coconá" and it turned out to be very nice:

In 1979, bones from a giant ground sloth and a mammoth was found in the cave. Giant ground sloths could get up to 6 meters long and weigh 4 tons. They originated in South America and crossed to North America when the connection between the two continents was formed around 2.7 million years ago. They went extinct around 10,000 years ago, probably due to being hunted by humans.

Our guide in the cave suggested that we should also go on a hike with him up the mountain in the jungle. We agreed, and it was amazing how much more lush the vegetation was in Tabasco compared to Campeche this time of year:
