Back in Baja
Date: November 27, 2024
After launching the boat in San Carlos we crossed the Sea of Cortez to the Baja side and slowly made our way south.
One of the places we anchored was next to this impressive cliff, called El Pulpito, which means "The Pulpit" in Spanish:
On one of our sunset dinghy rides there, we finally managed to take a few pictures of the jumping mobula rays aka devil rays. They are related to manta rays but like to leap out of the water, sometimes up to around 2 m, doing a few somersaults before splashing back down. It can be quite spectacular when a whole group of them start jumping:
Not a lot is known about mobula rays and it is not known why they jump although there are some theories suggesting that they do it to get rid of parasites. In any case it looks fantastic and like they have tremendous fun doing it.
A flock of brown boobies going somewhere before the sun sets:
We continued south to Caleta San Juanico where we stayed at anchor for several days. The bay is full of islets and cliff sticking out of the water:
We went on a dinghy ride to get a closer look at some sea caves:
One of the many islets with large cactus growing on top:
There was a large bird's nest on one of the narrow cliffs:
We didn't see any birds in it but it may be an osprey nest.
A brown pelican resting on a rock:
A lovely sunset in Bahia Balandra:
